Booking Through Thursday

I was looking through books yesterday at the shops and saw all the Twilight books, which I know basically nothing about. What I do know is that I’m beginning to feel like I’m the *only* person who knows nothing about them.

Despite being almost broke and trying to save money, I almost bought the expensive book (Australian book prices are often completely nutty) just because I felt the need to be ‘up’ on what everyone else was reading.

Have you ever felt pressured to read something because ‘everyone else’ was reading it? Have you ever given in and read the book(s) in question or do you resist? If you are a reviewer, etc, do you feel it’s your duty to keep up on current trends?

I most certainly think about it. I so far have not been caught up in the “Harry Potter” phenomenon, but at times I have been tempted because ‘everyone else’ seems to be ‘in on it’ and I’m curious, but so far the curiosity has not caused me to even read a sentence as I have so many other books to read.

I’ve never felt the slightest pressure to read a popular book–my tastes are far more eclectic and weird than most folks so I have little interest in potboilers, entertainments, escapes and multi-book series (the dream of fat agents and editors). I am only interested in feeding my intellect books that will enhance it…rather than offerings that insult my native intelligence. I recently blogged about my favorite books and I’m sure many would be unfamiliar to most readers…
